Attached is your invitation to "Building Children's and Communities'
Resilience: An Evaluation of Save the Children's Programming in New
Orleans." An event to be held on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at the
Tulane School of Social Work, Room #103 at Tulane University from
9am-12pm.
When Save the Children responded to Hurricane Katrina in the fall of
2005, it was the first time Save the Children had responded to a
domestic disaster. They had originally begun their psychosocial
programming in the Gulf Coast using a curriculum implemented
internationally. After an evaluation conducted by Rally (affiliated
with Tulane School of Public Health), it became clear that this
curriculum was not very effective locally. In 2006, our Psychosocial
team in New Orleans began to create a new curriculum that adhered better
to the behaviors being represented by children in the Gulf Coast. The
outcome was the Junior Journey of Hope, Elementary Journey of Hope, and
Adolescent Journey of Hope programs. Although Save the Children was
receiving excellent feedback from schools and partners where the
programs were being implemented, we needed our programs to be
evidence-based. Over the last year, the curriculum has been evaluated
by the International Institute on Children's Rights and Development. The
principle investigator, Dr. Natasha Blanchet-Cohen will be in New
Orleans on December 8, 2009 and is extremely interested in reporting
back to participants in the research as well as stakeholders in the
areas of behavioral health and education.
The outcomes of the evaluation are phenomenal!
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Natasha Blanchet-Cohen and celebrating
the accomplishments of Save the Children and its partners here in New
Orleans!
If you would like to attend, please RSVP Preet Samra at
hsamra at savechildren.org or (225) 288-5957.
Coffee and refreshments will be provided!
