Juan,

Yes I attended I missed the beginning however what I experienced was well
done and well received.  The attendance could have been better for the
information presented and the need.  It would have greatly benefitted many
of our young athletes, coaches, teachers,  school nurses, pediatricians ,
SBHcs and parents as they addressed the problem of closed brain injury as a
result of trauma.  Additionally, there were many retired NFL Players in the
audience who asked good questions and provided excellent information.  I
received feedback from many who attended and all were very positive.  A few
individuals said the promotional materials did not clearly communicate what
the event would cover.  I plan to contact Morehouse to give them my
feedback.  I think the venue also was not the best to get a lot of community
involvement.  They did pay for parking which was very helpful.

Juan,

 

They did cover depression there was a video that I believe was featured and
copies given out.  They covered the stigma issues so often associated with
mental illness.  Sylvia Mackey the wife of former NFL player John  Mackey
who shared her personal story about their struggle after her husband's
diagnosis of Frontal Temporal Dementia as a result of his 10year stint with
the NFL.    I would definitely encourage you to make the ask this is a very
worthwhile public education effort that is beneficial.  I think having it at
a high school, college or community venue would have made it more accessible
to the audiences I mentioned.  Let me know how you make out.  We will stay
in touch.

I am the director of Family Care, a Medicaid Mental Health Rehab program
located in Algiers.  We service all of Orleans and Jefferson Parishes on
the Westbank and Eastbank and Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes.
Since I am on your email list I would appreciate you spreading the word
through your email list that we currently have openings for new clients
by emailing the following announcement to your distribution list:

 

Family Care, a Mental Health Rehab agency in New Orleans, currently has
openings for new clients residing in Orleans , Jefferson, Plaquemines
and St. Bernard Parishes who are currently covered by Medicaid.  Clients
must be between 5 and 65 years old and have a history of psychiatric
treatment, which often includes a history of psychiatric hospitalization
and/or residential treatment..  They must have a severe to moderate
level of dysfunction in order to meet criteria for admission as per
Medicaid guidelines. Our trained and experienced staff of Masters Level
clinicians work with clients and families in their homes, schools and
the community.  Visits with the psychiatrist take place in our Algiers

Subject: [Sbbh] School-Based Behavioral Health Committee Update

Dear School-Based Behavioral Health Committee members:

 

We will not be having a committee meeting tomorrow, but our regular
meetings will resume on Thursday, October 21st.  Angela Tyrone, the
State Supervisor of School Social Work Services, will speak at our
meeting.  In addition, we will ask those in attendance to give a brief
update on their agencies' work.  Feel free to contact me with anything
additional you'd like to add to the agenda.

 

Yesterday a small group of us met to discuss whether or not to continue
with the monthly committee meetings.  We all agreed to continue and I
hope that each of you will find value in our meetings. At the least,
they serve as a great networking opportunity.  If there is ever anything
you would like discussed at the meetings, please let me know.

 

Thanks and I look forward to seeing all of you next month!
